The aim of this guide is to help in recognising flint tools and in distinguishing deliberately modified from naturally occurring rocks. So there are lots of them, and they were made over a long period of time. But what can we do with them? The first thing we must do is to recognise them and distinguish them from natural background stone. Stone undoubtedly was and still is used in completely unmodified states — many people have used a stone as a hammer at some point if nothing else is available. But unless it has been visibly modified or we find them in an unusual context — piles of small rounded stones found near hillfort entrances for example, that may be a cache of slingstones — it is usually very difficult to be sure that a natural stone has been used if that use does not leave traces.
The Early Neolithic flint mines of Sussex are amongst the most important prehistoric monuments in the British Isles. They date to shortly after the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition, when lifestyles in southern England transformed from being based on hunting and gathering to newly adopted practices, material culture and domesticates introduced from Continental Europe, c. The mines are therefore one of the earliest monuments to appear in the landscape whose remains are still visible today and can still inform on the spread of Neolithic practices across southern England.
These mines are characterised by shafts, up to 14m in depth, which join a complex basal system of galleries that exploit the flint seams. The flint was predominantly used for the production of bi-facial axes, many of which became polished.

Flint mining took place at Cissbury Hill during the Neolithic period long before the construction of the hill fort. Thanks to Victorian archaeologists we know that there are substantial surviving underground shafts and galleries here. Flints can be found scattered all over the ground but those that have been exposed to the elements become brittle and cannot be worked.

Goidschmidt A. Filed Mar. My invention generally relates to pyrophoric alloys and is more particularly directed to novel pyrophoric alloy compositions suitable for extrusion. Considered from another aspect, my invention is con cerned with an improved and simplified process for the extrusion of flints from pyrophoric alloy compositions and with the flints obtained thereby.
While flints for use in cigarette lighters and the like were originally produced by casting methods, such flints have, in recent years, been manufactured by extrusion, as extrusion, of course, increases the plant output, simplifies the manufacture and may be carried out with considerably less expenditure than casting methods.

We describe here ESR measurements on a damage signal which we have found to be present without exception in a wide variety of natural flints. The point defect responsible for the signal is identified and the samples are calibrated with an artificial damage simulation. Preliminary age determinations are presented for several natural flints. Flint is a sedimentary cryptocrystalline form of the mineral quartz , categorized as the variety of chert that occurs in chalk or marly limestone. Flint was widely used historically to make stone tools and start fires. It occurs chiefly as nodules and masses in sedimentary rocks, such as chalks and limestones. A thin layer on the outside of the nodules is usually different in colour, typically white and rough in texture.
This occurs in flints lying on the surface for tens or hundreds of thousands of years. DATING OF FLINT TOOLS Natural radiation that impinges on flint from the.

This paper asks whether an aesthetics of Paleolithic tools is possible, and if so, what it might be. The application of our own aesthetic sensibilities to artifacts of prehistory is not difficult. We easily recognize and appreciate their visual and tactile qualities. The more complicated questions that the paper explores are whether we can uncover the aesthetic sensibilities of their makers and, if we cannot, whether aesthetic examination of prehistoric tools from our own perspectives is adequate or useful.
The paper is based on study of Paleolithic flints from French archaeological sites dating from about , years ago to about 11, years ago. The human relationship with stone is as old as humanity itself. The earth, our home, is made of rock and stone. For at least as long as we have been human we have used rock and stone for dwellings, tools, hearths, walls, landscape markers, and for objects we label “art.
